The Vigneron

The vineyard is vigneron Pete Caldwell’s happy place. “It’s a big part of who I am,” he says. “People often talk about how wine is made in the vineyard and sometimes that’s a bit of spin but here, it's genuine.”

Pete was raised on his parents’ Tasmanian sheep farm before winemaking captured his heart. After studying the craft at Roseworthy Agricultural College, Pete took flight, gathering many-an “aha” moments across Burgundy, Bordeaux, California and New Zealand.  He’ll never forget his first vintage overseas, tasting juice straight off the press at a chateau in Bordeaux. “It showed me just how great wine can be when it’s not pushed or forced,” he says. “And if it’s the right variety, grown in the right place, and made in the right way.

After more than 20 years in the industry and a decade here at Dalrymple, Pete’s sense of adventure shows no sign of waning. “I got out of the comfort zone early in my career,” he says.” When he’s not making wine, you’ll usually find him fishing or cooking up nature’s bounty.
