The Details

Tasting Note Initial aromas of ripe cherries, black tea and Asian five spice lift from the glass. Over time hints of seaspray, cinnamon and cranberries build into the opulent bouquet. The palate is classical and well defined. Fine, natural acidity and a layer of sweet summer fruit add balance and texture before a long finish with lingering notes of black cherry and cinnamon spice.
Best Enjoyed With Roasted duck with cherry sauce reduction served on a bed of winter vegetables and potato puree. Wholegrain lasagne with aubergine, heirloom tomatoes, courgettes and capsicums.
Treatment The fruit was hand-picked and placed into two fermenters with 30% whole bunches included in the ferment, the balance being destemmed.Fermentation started naturally after three days and was complete after a further five days, with two gentle hand plunges during active fermentation to gently extract tannins. The wine was drained, pressed and settled prior to being placed in French oak barriques (35% new). The wine underwent malolactic fermentation during its 10 months in barrel.

Accolades

...an expansive, detailed shape to the wine as it swells with dark and red fruits...
Pinot noir sourced from the Cottage Block on the Dalrymple Pipers River estate. Aromas of ripe plum, red cherry and dried cranberries underscored by hints of fine spice, red licorice, purple floral tones, leaf litter, mushroom broth and game meats. There is an expansive, detailed shape to the wine as it swells with dark and red fruits before a seam of sapid acidity drives the wine to a sustained finish of spicy red fruits and gamey notes.

Spacious and detailed
Pipers River pinot noir from winemaker Peter Caldwell; matured in French oak barriques for 11 months. A bright, almost juicy nose of ripe red plums, red cherries and a splash of cranberry along with hints of exotic spices, Chinese barbecue, leaf litter, vanilla, stewed rhubarb and wildflowers. Spacious and detailed with spiced cherry fruit, powdery, fine tannins and a long line of acidity, finishing savoury and long with hints of game meats.

Wonderfully fine, silken palate
From an unirrigated site, in the protective lee of the hillside, this complex pinot is a little shy at first but opens up in the glass. Darker mulberry fruit mingles with cherry, some subtle clove and white pepper. The wonderfully fine, silken palate has a peppy freshness with spice, chai and graphite pencil complexity. A lovely wine that should begin to peak in five-plus years.

A long and most satisfying finish
Sleek! What a delightful Pinot Noir! Big love for the focus. The game face is on and it brings some tension too. Slinky. Delicious. Yes! This Pipers River glides with ease. Earthy with delicate fine spices, tea tree, blood orange, fennel and apricot kernel slowly emerge. A little mint made a fleeting appearance before moving on. Plums, red cherries, rhubarb and cranberries drive the fruit profile. Its ability to glide with ease has me coming back for more. A flash of meatiness and dried leaves have the last word on a long and most satisfying finish. After a couple of days of tasting it showed it would age nicely. Big love! Drink to eight years+

A luxurious pinot, utterly delicious
Deep red-purple colour, impressively deep, bright and youthful; deep, rich, ripe black fruits and sarsaparilla dominate the nose, and it’s similarly rich and opulent in the mouth with great depth of sweet fruit, dark-plum and blackberry flavours of fully ripe grapes, the tannins supple and ample. A luxurious pinot, utterly delicious.
Huon Hooke

Best Pinot Noir
The intense dark cherry nose benefits from a subtle touch of stems. The cherry characteristics carry through to a long, silky palate with some dried herb complexity. An impressive pinot with considerable depth of flavour.
